Net Zero by 2031

Solar Photovoltaics (PV)

For over a decade, Massport has been installing solar photovoltaic (PV) systems across our facilities. We are now accelerating these efforts to reach Net Zero by 2031. Solar panels reduce our need for electricity from the grid and cut associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. They also help generate the extra electricity needed as we electrify our buildings and transportation systems.

We currently have over 1 megawatt (MW) of solar PV installed, generating more than 1,100 megawatt-hours (MWh) of power each year—enough for nearly 190 average Massachusetts homes. However, this is just the beginning. We see the potential for an additional 38 MW of solar capacity at various locations, including a project under construction at Hanscom Airfield and planned projects at the Logan Airport Office Center and Piers Park II. Massport is evaluating other sites and expects to be able to install even more solar across its properties.

Among our planned projects is a solar PV installation at Worcester Regional Airport. With a capacity of 20 MW, we anticipate this project will be one of the largest in Massachusetts. It is expected to generate 23,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) annually, which will be enough to cover all of the electricity consumed by Massport at all facilities (excluding tenant operations). This project will include a battery storage system that would improve the resilience and reliability of the Massachusetts electrical grid.

By scaling up our on-site solar PV capacity, we estimate that we can reduce our GHG emissions by over 20,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (MTCO₂e), while boosting economic development and promoting environmental sustainability.
