Electric Vehicle Fleet Transition

Massport is making significant strides in electrifying our vehicles and equipment and supporting our tenants in doing the same. However, transitioning our entire fleet remains a significant challenge. Tackling this transition involves overcoming obstacles such as the absence of direct replacement equipment and potential power supply limitations. To address these obstacles, Massport has a comprehensive strategy to guide fleet electrification through 2038. The following projects highlight this progress:

State Police Hybrids

In fall 2023, the State Police at Logan Airport began transitioning to Ford Police Interceptor hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), which cut annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2.4 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (MT CO₂e) per vehicle. Massport has purchased 55 Ford Interceptors, replacing 30 internal combustion engine (ICE) models nearing the end of their operational life with additional replacements planned.

Light-Duty Electrification

Massport has acquired seven battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and three plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), including Chevrolet Bolts, Ford F-150 Lightnings, and Ford E-Transits.

Electric Shuttle Buses

Massport partnered with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) to order up to 50 fully electric buses for our on-airport shuttle bus fleet. The delivery of these buses is expected to start in 2027.

Airside Electrification

Massport purchased two fully electric airside buses to transport passengers between Logan Airport terminals and aircraft, offering a zero-emission airside travel solution.

Electric Street Sweepers

In addressing the electrification of our heavy-duty vehicles, Massport has begun to tackle specialized uses such as street sweeping. Massport procured an all-electric street sweeper currently operational at Logan Airport, reducing GHG emissions by 25 to 30 MT CO₂e annually.

Hybrid RTGs at Conley Terminal

At Conley Container Terminal, Massport is using hybrid electric rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes, which stack and transfer shipping containers in the yard. The hybrid cranes allow for more efficient fuel usage and lower emissions compared to conventional diesel-powered RTGs.

Tenant Fleet Electrification

Massport’s aviation tenants have advanced the electrification of Ground Support Equipment (GSE) at Logan Airport, including tugs, tractors, and baggage handling systems.
