The Safe Travel Barometer solution by Safe Travel Technologies has published an update to its Safe Travel Score for the top airlines and airports around the world. Major North American airports rated 4.3 out of 5 based on the latest evaluation of various initiatives related to COVID-19 Safety Protocols, Traveler Convenience and Traveler Experience, including testing, cleaning, fast track security and restaurant openings, among others. Here's a look at the U.S. airports that fare the best as of October 2020.
Rounding Out the Top 10
Denver, LaGuardia, Miami, Seattle-Tacoma and Tampa each scored 3.9 out of 5 for October 2020, tying them for 10th-best nationwide. LaGuardia recently made news for offering free COVID-19 testing at its newly renovated Terminal B.
Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport
Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport ranks ninth among the safest U.S. airports as of last month, earning a Safe Travel Score of 4.1 out of 5. The airport, which offers contactless baggage drop and check-in kiosks, is disinfecting high-touch surfaces with electrostatic spray and disinfecting wipes and offering travelers rapid antigen testing.
San Francisco International Airport
San Francisco International Airport finds itself in a five-way tie for the fourth-best Safe Travel Score in the U.S., receiving a 4.2 out of 5. The airport recently introduced COVID-19 testing as well as thermal screening for travelers and staff to help limit the potential spread of coronavirus.
Los Angeles International Airport
Elsewhere on the West Coast, LAX continues to lead the way by offering RT-PCR testing for travelers while fogging and wiping down high-touch surfaces. The airport also recently rolled out contactless food and beverage ordering and pick-up.
Philadelphia International Airport
Crews at Philadelphia International Airport are disinfecting boarding gate areas after every boarding in addition to enhanced cleaning in other areas. What's more, PHL is providing hand sanitizer for travelers and rolled out the Grab app for contactless food ordering, allowing passengers to bypass the line and avoid reaching for their wallet.
O'Hare International Airport
Chicago's O'Hare International Airport ranks the best in the Midwest, earning a 4.2 out of 5 with green checkmarks across a plethora of initiatives within all three sub-categories, including fast track security (Traveler Convenience); traveler health declaration form (COVID-19 Safety Protocols) and access to restaurants, lounges and other amenities (Traveler Experience).
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport
The world's busiest airport has taken several important steps to ensure traveler safety amid the pandemic, disinfecting boarding gate areas multiple times a day along with an anti-viral coating on high-touch surfaces. ATL is also providing face masks for travelers who forget to pack their own.
Newark Liberty International Airport
With a Safe Travel Score of 4.3 out of 5, Newark Liberty International Airport is tied for the top score nationwide. Enhanced cleaning, sanitizing stations, protective barriers, physical distancing reminders and mobile food options are just some of the ways that the airport is helping keep passengers and staff protected.
John F Kennedy International Airport
Nearby John F. Kennedy International Airport also earned a Safe travel Score of 4.3 out of 5 for October 2020, checking a majority of the most important boxes, including COVID-19 testing availability on-site. Passengers can also expect to see protective barriers and frequent disinfecting of high-touch surfaces.
Boston Logan International Airport
The Northeast currently leads the way in terms of traveler safety in the time of coronavirus, with Boston Logan International Airport tying for the best score alongside New York City's JFK and Newark. The airport has been quick to embrace COVID-19 testing as well as touch-free options, from check-in to security checkpoints and even restrooms.
