SOUTH BOSTON – The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) alongside its tenants at the Fish Pier and local elected officials celebrated the official opening of Boxes at the Boston Fish Pier, a dynamic and visually distinctive container installation located at the head of the pier along Northern Avenue. The event commemorated World Ocean Day and provided attendees the opportunity to learn about the seafood industry and Boston’s relationship with its Harbor.
Throughout the summer, Boxes will host weekly seafood markets, featuring Fish Pier tenants, as well as rotating sessions by local non-profits providing information about the seafood industry, aquatic ecosystems, sustainability and resiliency, climate change, Boston Harbor and more.
“Boxes at the Boston Fish Pier will allow the public to buy a variety of seafood directly from businesses at the Fish Pier, to meet and interact with them, and to learn about the seafood industry at the same time,” said Massport CEO Lisa Wieland. “We want to thank our many partners for their collaboration in creating a truly unique resource that highlights this key industry in the Working Port of Boston and its contributions to the Massachusetts economy.”
When not supporting active programming, the Boxes will also serve as an engaging amenity for pedestrians on Northern Avenue. The interior of the larger 40-foot container features six permanent educational panels that highlight the businesses and people that have made the Fish Pier the heart of Boston’s seafood industry for over a century. This informal “mini-museum” shares the history of fishing in the area, the past and present of the Fish Pier, and the local and global dynamics of the seafood industry today. The Boxes include moveable tables and chairs on an outdoor deck along the sidewalk, inviting people to pause, explore the space, and learn about the pier and the history of the South Boston Waterfront.
Massport worked with the tenants of the Boston Fish Pier to curate the new space that promotes the seafood industry and the many opportunities within it. Organizations involved in the design and installation of the space include Artists for Humanity, Agency Landscape + Planning, BRM Productions, Cannistraro, 10 World Trade, LOT-EK, Grayscale Collaborative and Wangro/Zaragunda.
