Continued Investments at Worcester Regional Airport
Taxiway rehabilitation project begins as airlines return
WORCESTER – The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) has begun work on a major taxiway at Worcester Regional Airport. The rehabilitation and safety enhancement project on the northern end of Taxiway B costs $2.1 million, a majority of which is funded by a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The work is expected to be completed by early November. Since Massport took over the airport in 2010, the Authority has made more than $100M in airport improvements.
“This investment at Worcester Regional Airport is another example of Massport’s commitment to serve Worcester and Central Massachusetts,” said Airport Director Andy Davis. “This project also highlights our focus on safety and energy efficiency, and it couldn’t have come at a better time as we prepare to serve more passengers and flights this fall.”
The taxiway rehabilitation project is not expected to impact flights. Worcester Regional Airport currently provides 1 daily, nonstop service to New York’s JFK International Airport (JFK) through JetBlue. On Oct 21st, JetBlue will add a second, nonstop service to JFK and resume flights to Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). On November 1st, Delta Air Lines will begin daily, nonstop flights to New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and on November 2nd, American Airlines will resume daily, nonstop service to Philadelphia (PHL).
Taxiway B is the longest taxiway at Worcester Regional Airport, located parallel to Runway 15-33. The 1,250-foot long section of the taxiway will be milled and repaved to improve the surface condition and drainage; a new energy efficient LED edge lighting system and guidance signage will be installed; and the edges are also being redesigned and widened or reconfigured geometrically to meet the FAA’s current design standards. Unlike previous airfield projects at the airport, the design work for this project was done internally by Massport employees, saving the Authority more than $100k. The taxiway also provides access to Rectrix Aviation, general aviation hangars and air freight services at Euro-American Worldwide Logistics.
