Massport Announces Schedule for Summer Runway Work

Safety Project will rehabilitate runway & replace pier

Wednesday, April 12, 2017

BOSTON – The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) today announced the Runway 4R-22L and Approach Light Pier Replacement Safety Project schedule, which will rehabilitate one of Logan Airport’s key runways and replace a light pier used in operations. The work for this project is necessary to maintain the high standards of safety at Logan.

The project will begin in mid-May and run through November of this year. During that time, Runway 4R-22L will be closed for approximately 40 days from May 15th through late June, which will allow for critical work to be done.

After the initial closure, work will continue from late June to early August between 10:00PM and 2:00PM, with Runway 22L available for arrivals only.  Both runway ends will be available for arrivals and departures during the busier late afternoon/evening period.  The goal is for the entire project, including the light pier work, to be completed no later than November 1.  Subject to wind and weather, communities may experience changes in runways in use during the period of construction.

“Safety is Massport’s top priority,” said Massport CEO Thomas P. Glynn. “While routine, this project will repair one of our critical runways as we work to continuously maintain Logan’s infrastructure and ensuring the safest environment for the traveling public, our employees and communities.”

This work is part of routine, but essential, safety maintenance projects that occur annually throughout airport property. The main goal of this project will be to replace the asphalt pavement that has deteriorated. The pavements were last rehabilitated in the years 2005, 2006 and 2008. This project will include work both on a runway and at the runway’s end to replace the light pier. The existing wooden pier will be replaced with a concrete pier designed to last 75 years; the current pier was originally constructed in 1955, with repairs last made in 2016.

Work will take place on various parts of the project 24/7, but work hours north of Runway 15R-33L will be limited to 7:00AM – 9:00PM, Monday through Friday; Saturdays, 8:00AM – 9:00PM; and Sundays 9:00AM – 9:00PM. The continuous work schedule and closure enhances safety and will reduce the overall construction timeline, bringing normal operations back faster.

Due to the aggressive schedule of this critical project to ensure this work can be completed in New England’s limited construction season, minimal to moderate flight delays are expected and passengers should, as always, check with their airlines before heading to Logan.

Traffic and noise impact from construction vehicles is expected to be minimal as the truck route implemented will be limited to state roadways (such as Route 1A) and prohibited on local roads.
