Logan Airport Sustainability Management Plan
In 2013, Massport received a grant through the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA’s) Sustainability Master Plan Pilot Program to complete the Logan Airport Sustainability Management Plan. Through this program, the FAA provides funding for the development of a Sustainability Master or Management Plan, which integrates sustainability principles into the airport planning process.
The Sustainability Management Plan represents the combined efforts of over 125 employees and tenants who came together to establish Massport’s baseline sustainability performance, develop goals, and identify new initiatives. Massport is focused on a holistic approach with an emphasis on economic viability, operational efficiency, natural resource conservation, and social responsibility.
The Logan Airport Sustainability Management Plan serves as a roadmap for prioritizing initiatives and moving goals forward along the path toward a more Sustainable Massport. This plan will guide Massport’s sustainability practices over the next decade and will support the Authority’s continued commitment to sustainability.
Massport has set a number of sustainability goals and targets to improve performance at Logan Airport, and established metrics for ongoing tracking of progress toward achieving those goals. The goals and targets identified in the Logan Airport Sustainability Management Plan will guide Massport as it advances its sustainability performance. The Sustainability Management Plan primarily focuses on five key resource areas (left column); the other five resource areas (right column) are already well-reported in the annual Logan Airport Environmental Data Reports.
A key component of the Sustainability Management Plan was the identification of initiatives, which are actionable programs or projects designed to help Massport reach its goals. Massport identified 34 short‑term initiatives as part of the Sustainability Management Plan. Initiatives were selected based on:
- Consistency with SMP Goals and Objectives
- Feasibility, including regulatory considerations
- Estimated costs and benefits
The Logan Airport Sustainability Management Plan has a robust set of recommendations, goals, and initiatives. Key to the successful implementation of the plan will be following a well laid out and organized framework within a reasonable time frame. Also important for successful implementation, is understanding and embracing implementation roles and responsibilities within the organization.
The Sustainability Management Plan has been designed to integrate with the Airport’s long-standing Environmental Management System to institutionalize sustainability and provide complementary processes. To streamline this integration, the Sustainability Management Plan has adopted the Plan-Do-Check-Act methodology used by the Environmental Management System.
To institutionalize sustainability and support its integration into daily operations, the Sustainability Management Plan includes a commitment from senior management, as well as a formal structure to oversee, manage, and implement the plan.
One of the cornerstones of a successful implementation strategy will be engaging Massport’s employees, tenants, and the public. Massport has developed several engagement instruments to support implementation.
Developing a Sustainability Tracking, Monitoring, and Reporting Framework
Tracking, monitoring, and reporting performance is an important element of a sustainability implementation process and serves as the foundation for continuous improvement. Massport will provide an annual report to the public and will provide quarterly reports to the Massport leadership and implementation teams.
